Without Gorbachev the world could still be in a highly volatile cold war state. Without Gorbachev Germany would still be divided.
Without Gorbachev South Africa would still be ruled by Apartheid (because of South Africa being strongly Anti-Communist, and had therefor received secret support by America and Britain). Without Gorbachev (because of Reagan and Thatcher's irresponsible encircling the Soviet Union with Pershing Rockets) a Nuclear World War was a high possibility! Without Gorbachev many nations, which are now free, would still be under a heavy Soviet Boot ! Who of today's leaders can claim to be Great and who has achieved so much in only a few years - without any bloodshed ! ?
Since I do not own the copyright of the photos included in my collage this image is not for sale - but merely intended as a tribute to a man without whom the world would be totally different today. -

Do you know, that Lithuania and other Baltic states were occupied as it is bruttually occupied now Crimea, part of Ukraine (Donbas)... After 1989 we started to restore our independence in peaceful way and ... we d i d it without goratchev's "blessing". All people are free and I think, that people are oblidged to know their historical motivation, if they need to understand each other... and I know exactly who is crime ... a propos, perhaps you have heard about "ribbentrop -molotov pact"... :) if you do not know your history, you are like a child :)

Yes πΌ Hedwig, I do know of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact and of other past (Hitler and Stalin carving up Poland) and of present day (like Ukraine) deceitful political and military acts - not only perpetrated by present day Russia but also by a variety of leaders and other nations...! - The sad truth is - it has always been that way - since we jumped out of the trees. -

πΌ Hedwig I have not heard of this assistant. What I know is that his Generals etc. wanted him to crush the rebellion, and Gorbachev said something like: "What do you want me to do - send in more tanks !?" - Ultimately he did not crush the uprising, unlike what the Soviets had done in Hungary and other places that rose up and resisted the Soviet occupation and might. - Of course, any death that happened during those days are deeply regrettable and should be condemned and those responsible should be made accountable in a court of law. - It is also always difficult when chaotic, world changing events and actions happen, to know exactly who did what and where. As someone said, Truth is always the first Casualty in a war or in any major conflict. - In my opinion on Balance, and seen Globally, Gorbachev's decisions, actions and choices made this world a better and a much safer place. -

Thank you HEDWIG for taking the time to comment. Although I'm not quite sure what you mean with - 'any Gorbachev can not help them...' He did help to free millions of people. π

If People are f r e e Souls, emphatic , wishing peace and help to each other, not tolerant to lie and occupation of their houses, if they are seeking education... etc - any gorbachev can not help them...

Yes on your thoughts... I am toying with a book idea of "The great psychopaths of history! " We need not look far to find a ton of them. One could conclude that leaders who were military leaders/ turned to world leaders fit the profile. Mao may well be the greatest murderer of all time--starvation and butchery that knew no bounds. 90 Million? How does one arrive at a figure with devastation so massive? Wonderful work of art. A book on history's many psychopaths would be great and necessary! Thank you REYNOLD for your appreciated L/F votes, astute comments and compliments. Indeed History is full of mass-murderers who are still inexplicably regarded as heroes - like Caesar who killed women and children in Gaul (today's France) in a "Shock and Awe" terror campaign to subdue and conquer Gaul. I think it is high time that history books are re-written. -
