Minoans and the Minoan Empire, which flourished from about 2600 to 1100 BC, controlled Crete and ruled the island in autonomous city states. Although the Minoans rose to a position of political, cultural and economic dominance during this time, their civilization was destroyed by a large volcanic eruption 300 km away at the island of Thera (Santorini). Latest research evidence indicates that the Thera eruption was the source of the legend and destruction of Atlantis.
