Alec Guinness lived from April 1914 to August 2000. He took part in WW2. As the commanding officer of a landing craft, he was involved in the invasion of Sicily, the invasion of Elba, the landing at Normandy and the Allied actions to supply arms to anti-German Yugoslavian partisan groups.
After the war, he continued his successful Shakespearean career, as well as evolving into an outstanding film actor switching easily from comedy like 'The Lady Killers' to heavy drama, from a Russian in 'Doctor Zhivago' to an Arabian King in 'Lawrence of Arabia' or to a Roman as Emperor Marcus Aurelius in 'The Fall of the Roman Empire'
His brief military service was reflected in the film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' in which he played a 'hard as nails' officer and for which he won the 1958 Academy Award for Best Actor.
He also receveive many Oscar nominations - and a Life-Achievement Academy Award for his supreme acting work !
